Work from the Collection

Sombrero y culebra

Artist: Sol Calero
Date: 2019
Materials: Acrylic and pastel on canvas
Collection: Lafayette anticipations - Fonds de dotation Famille Moulin
Domain: Peinture

By juxtaposing a blue hat, four pieces from a domino game, and a snake on a background of pink wallpaper, like the images in the books and magazines she collects, Sol Calero draws on two different traditions. On the one hand, she refers to her South American origins through the bright colours and the snake, present in Mesoamerican art with the figure of the god Quetzalcoatl. On the other hand, following a residency in Nice, her paintings reflect the influence of Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall, through the free use of colour, the absence of perspective, and the reinvention of the still life genre that are at work in their canvases. More broadly, the symbols of the hat, the snake, and the dominoes appear as abstract images born of the artist’s own memories. They embody issues such as memory, oral transmission, and heritage, inviting us to question the norms of the European perception of the world.
