Palm

This silhouette of a palm tree appears to have been cut out of an old photograph and inserted into a frame in an aesthetic imbued with melancholy and a fascination for these images with the appearance of postcard details. As in other works depicting landscape elements, here Anne Neukamp is interested in the geometry of the shapes, which, through either superimposition or separation, blur the palm tree’s original appearance. Similarly, the dechromatisation at work here gives the canvas an atonal dimension and blurs the motif through pastel colours that seem emptied of their substance. These dull tones are characteristic of the artist's early career, shortly before her transition from figuration to abstraction, and, like Piet Mondrian, the quest for the “ultimate form”.
