Ô...Trees
Enclosed in resin, the “spiky-headed” figure in Ô...Trees (2023) seems to come from another world. This cast in polyester resin and fibreglass is reminiscent of Constantin Brancusi’s Bird in Space (1923), with the same cylindrical base from which the sculpture gives the impression of reaching for the sky. The enigmatic face with its pupil-less eyes whose upper extremity ends in a point is a recurring motif in the artist’s work. In this work, he invokes his personal mythology, as well as his affection for the theme of transformation and nebulous mutations, between Western culture and West Indian voodoo, which is made up of religious and magical syncretisms. This work is one of a series of similar sculptures that interact with each other and turn their backs on the viewer. In the exhibition ZOO “The Day of Heaven and Hell” at the Lafayette Anticipations Foundation (2023), six of them faced each other in a cubic room covered in a garish green paint reminiscent of the green backgrounds of film sets.
