The Surplus of the non producer
Since 2017, The Surplus of the Non-Producer has travelled to a number of venues, from art centres to high schools, disseminating along the way a practice of “commoning” that challenges the norms and habits of institutional praxis. Working with and through the plurality of the assembly, Ève Gabriel Chabanon invites us to question the conditions and politics of cultural work. The Surplus of the Non-Producer continued to test its modes of assembly, inhabiting, indebtedness, and spatialization at and beyond the margins in Le Surplus at Bétonsalon, Paris (2020); Chapter 3 at the Westfälischer Kunstverein, Münster (2020); and Chapter 4: Sold at the Beursschouwburg, Brussels (2021). A solution then emerged: a greater practice of failure. From workshops to exhibitions, from contract negotiations to collective translations, Ève Chabanon has modelled The Surplus as a loose yet constant whole.
