While Michaela Eichwald is primarily known for her pictorial work associated with abstract expressionism, she has also tried her hand at sculpture, with works that question artistic language and the materiality of creation. Following on from new realism and its “poetic recycling of the real”, as art critic Pierre Restany put it in 1960, she reuses unexpected elements of everyday life (such as noodles or a thermometer) in an experimental and humorous way. She invites the viewer to question the meaning of these objects, in particular through the use of resin, which is suggestive of immortality, in contrast with consumer products. This approach is reinforced by her choice of titles, which are at odds with the work they describe, like Lyrikknappschaft Auswurt (“Poetry tourist bureau”), a linguistic invention that echoes the self-deprecating uhutrust.com blog where the artist shares her daily life and her thoughts.
