Against a misty background where a house stands out, two figures appear in contrast. One white, the other black, they seem lost in their own interiority. In the foreground, a bird perched on a branch and sprays of tulips suggest spring. In this painting, the painter also draws on her childhood memories and recalls her ghosts. Entitled April Fool, it seems to have been painted by trial and error, the misty contrasts recalling the uncertainty of April. Inspired by the first line of T. S. Eliot’s long poem The Waste Land (1922) - ‘April is the cruelest of months’ - Nino Kapanadze evokes a changing atmosphere where cold and heat meet hesitantly. She uses the technique of oil painting on linen canvas, which she makes her own by applying the colours with fluidity and transparency. Her research is both pictorial and sensory. These vaporous and powdery effects allow her to propose a painting between two states.
