The Alchemy of the Hinge

The Alchemy of the Hinge is a large razor clam. The bivalve shape, like that of the mollusc, is formed by sheets of Plexiglas held together by a brass hinge. Painted undulating shapes on the valves recall the organic, living nature of the shellfish. Delicately placed against a wall, the knife is surrounded by a slender steel structure embellished with a single light bulb whose refracted light recalls the movement of a clam on the sand. The work is intended to interact with the viewer, who is given the option to light the bulb. It is also restricted by an energy consumption limit set by the artist. In this way, Kasia Fudakowski questions our individual and collective responsibilities in terms of energy consumption. After the artist’s death, the work is to remain switched off.
