Warm Up Session avec Benjamin Bertrand Lafayette Anticipations

For this next Warm Up Session, dancer-choreographer Benjamin Bertrand proposes to lead us into his recent research around the practice of Noh, as explored in his new solo Vestiges [remains] (2020).

Starting from this traditional Japanese performance that often invokes spirits, Bertrand elaborates a “gestured atlas of these melancholic dances” which he intends to share, as a passer, to the participants of this Session. Echoing philosopher Timothy Morton’s affirmation-invitation — “Intimacy presents us with the problem of inner space. Our intimacy with other beings is full of ambiguity” —, Bertrand seeks, through movement, to awaken these remains — feelings, memories — in us/out-of-us, that haunt us like ghosts.
This Warm Up Session is adapted to the current context of deconfinement. It will be held 1-on-1, one participant at a time with the choreographer, reflecting his detailed and profoundly intimate exploration. The participants of this Session will then be invited to join a group discussion with the choreographer, moderated by Madeleine Planeix-Crocker, on Google Hangouts/Zoom. A filmed version of this Warm Up Session will also be available online as of mid-July.

The Warm Up Sessions stem from the desire to collectively discover, embody and question training techniques in performance. The series aims to situate the warm up as a vital step in the creation of performance pieces. Thus, training is understood as a starting point for choreographic, dramaturgical or performative productions, both a process of sharing and reflecting. Based upon inclusive invitations, the Sessions seek to deconstruct silos between movement and thought. The series offers a space to practice and discuss, open to all, and conceived in close partnership with guest artists. In this experimental terrain, audience members become active participants, giving birth to an ephemeral and recurring event.

A series curated by Madeleine Planeix-Crocker.

Recommended to wear comfortable clothes to move in, open to all.
