Seelische Oxidation

This abstract interlacing of colours, created in large brushstrokes using a variety of unusual techniques and media, belongs to the tradition of abstract expressionism, and in particular of the creative gesture of the artist such as in Jackson Pollock’s action painting. Here, however, the canvas engages in an unexpected dialogue with three assemblages of everyday objects, with which it is associated through the same ochre and rust palette, colours reminiscent of the resin used in the sculptures. This material, which symbolises immortality and purity in many civilisations, contrasts with the title of the painting, a linguistic invention with poetic implications. The notion of oxidation, which seems to explain the chromatic range of the work, gives the soul a tangible dimension and makes it subject to physical transformations just like those of an object.
