Rock

Small plates of shiny metal—aluminium, copper, brass—and Plexiglas are fixed to a rock that has washed up on the ground. The piece evokes the debris of a building on which honorary plaques have been affixed, but as no inscription is engraved on them, the composite object passes into the realm of the absurd. By alchemy, the mineral mixes with the metal, the work acting like a kind of talisman charged with an intrinsic strength and memory: according to Tatiana Trouvé, all her work is directed by “the idea of time and the theme of memory.” The artist often uses copper, a conductive material that is said to have many medicinal properties, as an agent of transmission in her works. She has attached copper or bronze locks and weights onto other stones in this series, as if the rock contained a secret of its own.
