Valentin Noujaïm’s filmmaking is utopian and phantasmagorical. His work is based on formal research in which film dialogues with digital technology, using special effects and animated images to create a strange universe bordering on the surreal. In his films, the artist draws on his personal history and his family’s Mediterranean origins. Shifting between documentary and fiction, he tackles political, social, and post-colonial issues. He presents documentaries based on eyewitness accounts, but also historical or imaginary narratives featuring dream portraits, as in his project Vie d’Héliogabale made during his residency at the Villa Medici in Rome in 2023.
Born in 1991 in Angers (France), Valentin Noujaïm graduated from La Fémis in July 2020.
