Bas Jan Ader

Born in 1942 at Winschoten, The Netherlands.
Conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader gained mythic status as an artist literally willing to die for his work.

The artist was lost at sea in 1975 during the middle part of what was to be his grand trilogy of works In search of the miraculous.

Ader uses the cool analytical aesthetics of conceptual art to explore decidedly subjective, emotive, sublime and existential themes, often using himself as a protagonist in his performative works.

The artist’s work has been exhibited extensive at museums worldwide such as Museum of Modern Art, New York, Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Lafayette Anticipations, Paris among many others and has been include in major exhibitions like the Venice Biennale, the Sao Paolo Biennial and the Getty Museum’s Pacific Standard Time series of exhibitions in Los Angeles. His work is included in collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the National Gallery, Washington, D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris among others.
