The Center Cannot Hold / Interview Dirk Meylaerts #1

Dirk Meylaerts, director of production, talks about the way Jumana Manna's sculptures blend into the architecture.

Dirk Meylaerts is Director of Production at Lafayette Anticipations - Fondation d'entreprise Galeries Lafayette.

After studying philosophy, Dirk Meylaerts went on an international tour as a dancer with the company of choreographer Jan Fabre in a piece entitled "The power of tetanic madness".  At the age of 23, he decided to become a furniture designer. After finishing his cabinetmaking studies at the Arts et Métiers in Brussels, he works for two years for a German master cabinetmaker before opening his first workshop where he works on unique pieces for private clients. He also develops products for Exki and even chocolate for Pierre Marcolini. In 2006, he founded D&A Lab, a project around design and art, where limited editions are produced and sold in collaboration with internationally renowned artists.

Jumana Manna is a Palestinian artist working primarily with film and sculpture.

Her work explores how power is articulated through relationships, often focusing on the body and materiality in relation to narratives of state-building, and histories of place.

Jumana Manna received a BFA from the National Academy of Arts in Oslo and an MA in Aesthetics and Politics from California Institute of the Arts.

She has participated in multiple festivals and exhibitions, including Lafayette Anticipations, BAFICI, IFFR Rotterdam, Tate Modern, Marrakech Biennale 6 and The Nordic Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale.

Manna was awarded the A.M. Qattan Foundation’s Young Palestinian Artist Award in 2012, the Ars Viva Prize for Visual Arts and was nominated for the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst in 2017.
